Insurance
A yacht or motorboat is not only a valuable asset but also a source of increased responsibility on the water. A properly selected insurance policy can protect the vessel, its equipment, the owner, crew and third parties. Cover is always arranged individually, taking into account the vessel’s type and value, year of manufacture, navigation area, operating season, storage conditions and the skipper’s experience.
What can be insured
- Hull & Machinery — the hull, engines, navigation systems and standard equipment specified in the policy.
- Third Party Liability / P&I — injury or damage to third parties, collision liability and, where specifically agreed, pollution liability.
- Personal accident cover — accidents involving the owner, crew or passengers.
- Additional risks — trailer transport, launching and lifting, winter storage, regatta participation, charter use or a tender. These risks must be expressly agreed with the insurer.
Risks commonly covered by a policy
Depending on the programme, cover may include fire, explosion, storm, collision, impact, grounding, capsizing, damage while moored, theft of the vessel or its parts, malicious acts by third parties, and actual or constructive total loss. The insured risks, navigation area, deductible and exclusions must be stated clearly in the contract.
What requires particular attention
- Navigation area. The policy may apply only in specified seas, countries or inland waterways.
- War risks and territorial restrictions. Standard policies often exclude war, occupied territories and certain hazardous waters. Obtain written confirmation of cover for your intended route.
- Deductible. Confirm the amount applicable to each category of loss and whether it applies to total loss.
- Agreed value. Establish which documents are required to confirm the value of the yacht and additional equipment.
- Skipper and crew requirements. The insurer may require certificates and documented experience with a vessel of this type.
- Mooring and storage. The marina, mooring arrangement, winterisation, security and seasonality may affect cover.
- Charter and racing. A private-use policy does not necessarily cover commercial operation or sporting events.
- Claims procedure. Check notification deadlines, required documents, survey procedures and whether repairs abroad are permitted.
Who insures watercraft in Ukraine
As of September 2026, specialist products for water transport or small craft are publicly offered by the following insurers, among others:
- INGO — watercraft insurance including private yachts, motorboats, boats and personal watercraft; marine risks and owners’ liability are also available.
- UNIQA — insurance for water transport and liability arising from the operation of a vessel.
- PZU Ukraine — cover for vessels, their equipment and related property interests; territorial limits are defined by the policy.
- OMEGA Insurance — a dedicated programme for yachts, motorboats, boats and personal watercraft, with optional vessel owner’s liability cover.
- EXPO Insurance — products for watercraft and small vessels and owners’ liability, including participation in regattas.
This list is not a ranking or a recommendation of any particular company. Products, licences and terms may change. Before entering into a contract, verify the insurer in the official register of the National Bank of Ukraine and compare not only the premium but also exclusions, deductibles, liability limits, reinsurance arrangements and practical experience in handling marine claims.
Information required for a preliminary quotation
- make, model, year of manufacture and registration documents;
- market or agreed value;
- list of standard and additional equipment;
- permanent berth and winter storage arrangements;
- intended navigation area and period;
- type of use: private, charter or racing;
- the skipper’s qualifications and experience;
- previous claims history.
How to choose a policy
Request at least two or three written quotations based on the same insured value and navigation area. Compare the complete terms: a lower premium may involve a higher deductible, a narrower navigation area or significant exclusions. For a high-value yacht, international voyages, charter use or regatta participation, it is advisable to consult a marine insurance specialist.
The Boats.in.ua team can help prepare the yacht’s technical information for an insurer and clarify questions relating to equipment, valuation and operation. Final terms, premiums and decisions on cover are determined by the selected insurer.
